The medium in which they are integrated is shows soluble properties when mixed with some same solvent, pigment are crystal by physical properties and can be easily dissolve during in the process. Thus by physical properties that pigment possesses are different than that of dyes but both doses the same function: that is coloring the medium. As far as the chemical properties are concern both the pigments and dyes are same, the functional application is what makes them different from each other and it varies industry to industry.
Pigment of different nature may me dissolve in one medium and partially in other depends on the function of application and process employed and majorly temperature of the system decides the rate of solution in a particular process. There are some other properties of pigments or a pigmented system which decides the area of its application and the quantity measure to be taken in a system, such as light-fastness, Heat stability, and tinc-torial strength are often evaluated in a process in which it is applied.
